This is one of the earliest Baroque churches in Vilnius, and it is presumed to be the work of an Italian architect, Constantino Tencalo, who also worked on St Casimir’s Chapel in the cathedral. The Church was built between 1633 and 1650 under the patronage of Steponas Pacas Expensive materials were used to build the Church – sandstone imported from Sweden, granite and the black and red marble. In 1812 the interior of the Church was damaged, later the Church was renewed several times. The high altar is one of the most beautiful altars in Lithuania. Wall painting dates from the 18th century. The painting The Apotheosis of St Teresa on the high altar is by Szymon Czechowicz, and the paintings of saints in the nave are by Kanutas Ruseckas.
